Ever since I can remember I have always been taught to be a hard worker, and to work for what you want.   Even when I decided to pursue a different career than the one my family had hoped, they expected me to be the best at whatever it was I wanted to pursue.   When I informed my grandfather that I would not be an engineer like he wished I would, he said “It does not matter what it is you choose to do in life, what matters is that you are the best at what you do”.   With my father and my grandfather’s blessing I worked hard to become an International Student and move to the United States to pursue a degree in Graphic Design.   I had to overcome a couple of obstacles in my way, but I was determined to receive a degree in the career that I love and that I believe I was born to do.

I began to pursue a career back in 2004 when I moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida as an International Student.   I attended Broward Community College, now known as Broward College.   I completed 57 credits towards their Graphic Design Technology Degree.   Before I was able to complete that degree I go married and my husband joined the Air Force and we where stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama.   I was forced to put my education on hold while I applied to change my International Student Immigration Status to a Permanent Resident Status.   After everything was resolved, I began to get back on track with my education by choosing an online school, so I would not have an issue if I had to move again due to my husband’s military duty.   I enrolled at American InterContinental University Online and finished my Associates in Business Administration, graduating with honors.   I recently obtained a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Visual Communications with a concentration in Graphic Design with the same online school.   I have completed this degree with a 4.00 GPA and consequentially graduated with honors, Summa Cum Laude. I am currently researching online options for a Masters of Fine Arts Degree.

Professional Experience

After graduating high school, I was employed at a restaurant in Venezuela as a hostess, and this job provided great experience in dealing with customers and day-to-day activities of a business.   After moving to the US, I began working as an Administrative Assistant for a private language school.   The language school had numerous design needs that I began to fulfill as I was attending school at the same time for the Graphic Design degree.   This first experience working as an in-house graphic designer for the school was very valuable, because I was able to form an alliance with the graphic designers who worked for the school, who would teach me and coach me in all graphic design matters of the business.   After moving to Alabama, the Maxwell Air Force Base Graphics and Photo Lab hired me, and this was the first position in which I was solely dedicated to being a graphic designer, creating, developing, researching and constructing products from beginning to end.   I was also selected to cross-train into the photography side of the business and this experience opened a new interest in photography for me.   However, I was forced to leave this job in order to focus completely in finishing my career.   Fortunately, I am still able to provide freelance work to a couple of clients that I had gathered from my previous networking in Florida, as well as through the Air Force.

Publications and Professional Affiliations

Working for the air force provided great means to have my work published in several different media.   Some of my graphic design work and also photographs have been published on the Maxwell Air Force Base website.   Also, some of my work has been published in the Maxwell Air Force Base newspaper, The Dispatch, and several other Air Force publications.   Other published work includes several advertisement designs created for Lingua Language Center in various bilingual magazines such as the Broward Kid’s Directory, El Venezolano, Latinbiz, New Times, Sun-Sentinel, Tiempos de Mundo and the Weston Gazette.

Personal Vision

Continuing to further my education is one of my main goals.   I would like to pursue a Masters of Fine Arts Degree.   I would also like to complete a certification in Photography and Web design.   I would like to continue gathering experience in my career field by working as an in-house Graphic Designer, and eventually becoming an Art Director.   A more ambitious goal is to later own and operate a private Graphics shop.
